I know, I saw it. It’s disgusting. That guy should die in prison and those people, those Libyans should be ashamed. And the gov’t–who obviously organized the homecomig–hell…I don’t even know what to say. People just don’t think anymore I guess.

Ok now let me tie this into liberal philosophy and then twist the whole thing around and blame Obama (just kidding on the latter). Liberal philosophy is predicated on the idea that when people do things or when something happens to an individual, it is not the fault of their own. In this example it was thought that this man was brainwashed, he was put up to it and/or he was ignorant of the real world around him. Therefore they should show compassion and allow him to die on his own soil. While all this may be true (or not), there are certain universal laws that when broken, must be punished without prejudice or the effect of the punishment will be weakened significantly. This same concept applies to domestic policy. People got into bad loans and need to be bailed out. People can’t succeed because of history and racism. People commited crimes because they had bad parents. While all this may also be true, giving a pass just perpetuates the problems. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t help the downtrodden or poor. But we can as a society decide at what level we step in. Liberals tend to want to take care of everyone at the expense of the individuals right to be free and prosper. They also want a central government to facilitate and dispense this medicine. Conservatives and Libertarians want to localize this and reduce central authority.

The other issue this brings up the liberal concept that if we show understanding and compassion to our enemies, that they will see the light and want to foster a relationship based on shared principals. Conservatives understand that this is not a zero sum game. This person who killed those 2 hundred and something people and the people who reveled in their release want nothing to do with our values or principals. Conservatives know that we are reviled because of our values and principals.

Yes. I know. Thanks! Obviously it’s a gray area, some of the nature/nurture stuff. When someone pulls a trigger and kills someone he/she is ultimately responsible. But this is why we have courts. Is it murder in the 1st or 2nd? Manslaughter? Was his environment so detrimental as to effect his cognitive reasoning? This is all psych/soc 101 stuff–no need to explain it to you. If you think environment plays no role in a person’s reasoning or actions you are sadly mistaken. Does it make him less guilty? No…but society has to look at everything from all angles when considering the punishment. That being said, I think this guy should have been put to death years ago.

Do you think killing a pedestrian while driving drunk is murder? Some do. I do not.
